The Cape Government Railways 1st Class 4-4-0 of 1879 is a South African steam locomotive from the pre-Union era in the Cape of Good Hope.
In 1878 the Cape Government Railways placed orders with the Avonside Engine Company for four more 1st Class tender locomotives with a 4-4-0 American type wheel arrangement. They were intended for fast passenger service on the Cape Western and Eastern systems and were delivered in 1879. Eleven more locomotives followed from Neilson and Company in 1880.〔''C.G.R. Numbering Revised'', Article by Dave Littley, SA Rail May–June 1993, pp. 94-95.〕

In 1880 they were followed by another eleven locomotives built by Neilson and Company, numbered in the ranges from W33 to W38 for the Cape Western system and E10 to E14 for the Cape Eastern system.〔
All these locomotives were later also designated 1st Class when a locomotive classification system was introduced by the CGR.〔
